MIRMgate online survey outcomes
In 2005, MIRMgate users were invited to complete an online survey designed to gather information about site performance and user preferences. The data collected from the survey has revealed some useful information.
Respondents placing themselves in the category of safety officers were by far the largest occupational group (33%) using MIRMgate, with the remainder split amongst 35 other occupations. 54% of respondents had been using MIRMgate for less than 3 months, while only 30% had been using the system for more than 12 months.
Frequency of visits varied considerably, with 27% reporting that they visited MIRMgate several times a year, and 21% reporting that it was their first visit. Respondents mostly heard about MIRMgate from a friend or business associate (32%), or by conference/journal articles (22%). People appeared to use MIRMgate for a range of purposes, although looking for general information was most commonly cited (33%).
When asked to rate some of the key MIRMgate features, 76% rated location of information as good or very good, while more than 80% rated the quality and currency of information as good or very good. However, reliability of information was rated as good by only 32% of respondents, with news information rated good or very good by 60% of respondents.
Respondents were asked to rate the array of search tools for effectiveness. More than 70% of respondents rated the Basic Search option as useful or very useful, while less than 60% rated the Advanced Search option as useful or very useful. It was noted that almost 30% of respondents had never used the Advanced Search option, while all except 14% had used the Basic Search option. It is hoped that the introduction of the Search Strategies Guide will encourage more people to try the Advanced Search option. When asked about the usefulness of the “Browse By” tool, two-thirds or more of all respondents rated hazard, task and subject as useful or very useful. Browse By Task was the least used of these options.
It was encouraging to note that 87% of respondents reported satisfaction with their user experience, with more than 70% rating both ease of use and visual appeal as good or very good. Most importantly, 99% affirmed that they would revisit in the future.
Thank you to all those who have submitted completed surveys. Congratulations to the following winners drawn from the list of respondents:

MIRMgate website and system upgrade
In 2005 the MIRMgate website was reviewed for usability and functionality. While the online survey has provided data that indicates a reasonable level of satisfaction with MIRMgate, a number of improvements have been identified to drive the level of usage and satisfaction to higher levels. An upgrade of both the website and system architecture is currently underway and is expected to be released in mid-2006.
